
COLOMBIA NEWS — Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos met Monday with the head of the Spanish Government Mariano Rajoy, in the beginning of an official visit to this country.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry said the fundamental objective was to ask for political support to the peace negotiations with the guerrillas and discuss possible ways of participation and financial aid in a possible post-conflict scene.
Santos, who will travel later to France, the united Kingdom, Portugal, Germany and Belgium, also explained the evolution of the peace process between the Colombian Government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP), according to the Foreign Ministry press release.
In his speech during the Honoris Causa Award ceremony of Colombian President Jose Manuel Santos at the Camilo Jose Cela University, Rajoy urged Colombian rebel forces to use properly what he considered a bright, unprecedented opportunity.
The Spanish authorities said that the European Union is planning a Trust Fund with contributions from member countries and non members of the EU, and private entities willing to participate in the post-war period, and they ratified the bilateral support to Colombia, following a peace agreement.
They also ratified that Spain would continue supporting Colombia in bilateral issues, wit the same commitment showed so far.
During the meeting, Santos and Rajoy also reviewed the state of their bilateral relations, which were called excellent, as well as Colombia’s relations with the EU and other issues in the Latin American regional agenda.
