President Santos vows to pursue FARC during peace talks

Juan-Manuel-Santos

BOGOTÁ, Colombia – Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said one of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia’s (FARC) finance officers recently died during a military operation, adding forces will continue to pursue the terrorist group while peace talks are being held in Havana, Cuba.

John Hernández, who went by the alias “Fabián,” headed finance for the 17th Front, Santos said.

“I told the mayors here that many of my opponents are trying to show that the government is letting its guard down and the government is handing over the country to communism,” Santos, speaking after meeting mayors in Neiva, the capital of the department of Huila, said. “There’s no such thing.”

Santos, who is seeking re-election on May 25, said that military offensives against the FARC would continue “until the time we get these [peace] agreements.”

The conflict is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and displacing about five million people.
