President Promises to Strengthen Bilingualism in Colombia

President Juan Manuel Santos announced Wednesday that the government will support over 200 volunteers to teach English in Colombia in 2014.

According to a Presidential press release, there are already 43 volunteer teachers from the United States, Canada and Britain in Colombia, who arrived through a volunteer foundation to help strengthen English programs in public colleges and universities across the country for roughly one year.

“I appreciate your presence and what you are doing for thousands of Colombians. Nowadays bilingualism is essential for the life of any professional and this makes your task something key for us,” the President said.

Volunteers are assigned to schools located in large urban institutions as well as smaller municipalities in four regions across Colombia.

The foundation “Voluntarios Colombia,” whose purpose is to improve English levels for its educators and students, has functioned since 2009 in alliance with the organization World Teach.
