Some 100 mothers breastfed their children in outdoors in Medellin in order to break the world record set by the international movement The Big Latch On, to encourage breastfeeding.
This was the first time for Colombia’s second largest city, in the event that took place on Friday August 1 and Saturday August 2 across the world.
The current record set last year is 14536 children breastfeeding across 845 locations, in 28 countries. The vision of The Big Latch On is to hold an event walking distance of every family in the world.
Mothers with children in their arms, sat on plastic chairs arranged provided by the Hospital Universitario de San Vicente, organizer of the initiative in Medellin.
Most mothers gathered in Medellin this Friday morning wearing the yellow jersey of the Colombian National Team, as well as their children, lactating in front of spectators.
In Colombia, breastfeeding went from 2.2 to 1.8 months between 2005 and 2010, according to official nutrition and health survey ENSIN cited by the hospital statement.
