Colombia News – Bogota’s public transport will be improved with new environmentally friendly buses, with 22 operating on Tuesday, national media reported.

The new buses that will start operating in Colombia’s capital perform with hybrid engines which reduce air and noise pollution. The new hybrid buses will also be able to pick up passengers from existing stops of mass transit bus system Transmilenio and other platforms, since the buses have doors on both sides.

According to El Pais newspaper, the eco-buses will replace 40 that operate on Carrera Septima, Bogota’s main artery. By July, approximately 2000 traditional buses and mini-buses operating on the Carrera Septima will be replaced.

“There will be 180 buses with hybrid engine in total operating on the carrera septima, which will be completed by May,” Bogota’s Interim Mayor Gustavo Petro told El Pais.

The hybrid buses are produced by the Swedish brand Volvo.
