After a week of absence, Vargas continued his tour through the country to inaugurate public works, saying that while doctors define a date for the surgery, he will continue working.

Initially, the vice-president’s office said that an “excessive workload” added to the benign tumor had caused his collapse last week.

Vargas, a member one of the country’s political dynasties, is widely believed to be running for president in 2018.
