Colombian Vice-President Angelino Garzon turned down a plum government job, nominated to be Colombia’s ambassador to Brazil because his dog wouldn’t like the weather.
Garzon pointed out that he is referring to the the family dog, a German shepherd named Orion, a “very hairy dog” and would get too hot in Brasilia’s hot climate.
Colombia’s foreign minister, Maria Angela Holguin, has not been impressed with his pet loyalty. She was quoted saying the VP’s reasons for turning down the job were “very embarrassing.” And in a letter Garzon wrote about why, she assumed his personal reasons were “much deeper than that the climate would affect a dog.”
And for what it’s worth, the photos on the Web site of the Kennel Club de Brasilia suggest that dogs can live quite happily there.
