Colombian Senator Proposes to Freeze Fuel Prices

Colombian Senate President Juan Fernando Cristo proposed today to freeze fuel prices until December in order to try and find an alternative to dialogue with the truckers, who joined the national protest. Cristo said this would be a good way to start to play down the impact of high prices of gasoline and diesel, local media reported.

fuel-pricesThe price freeze until the end of this year, he said, can be a good alternative and would be an initial step to start negotiating with the truckers.

According to the newspaper El Espectador, Cristo supported the need to install a dialogue to study the formula that is currently being applied.

Some 300,000 truckers joined the agrarian national strike that began Monday in the entire country.

At a press conference in Bogota, Enrique Virviescas, truckers union leader, said they joined agricultural sectors in this protest because they heavily rely on them.

If the government continues to drive the wrong policy in the cost of oil, it will be very hard tol move forward, he said.
