Colombian Navy seizes 1.2 tons of cocaine

The Colombian naval authorities Wednesday seized about 1.2 tons of cocaine hidden inside a shipping container.

The authorities acted on an anonymous tip that led them to “identify a container that was being used by Colombian drug trafficking networks to smuggle cocaine” into the islands of San Andres and Providencia, the Navy said in a statement.

“The container, which had recently arrived on the island from Cartagena, contained boxes of cooking oil and dog food among other things,” said the statement.

“While verifying the contents of each case, authorities found that 130 of them had hidden drugs,” which were estimated to have a street value of over 38 million U.S. dollars.

Naval officials in San Andres have launched an investigation to identify the owners of the cargo.

So far this week, they have seized nearly 2.5 tons of cocaine.
