Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin said today in Liberia that the eradication of poverty is only possible in a context of sustainability, the Foreign Ministry told local media.
In her speech during the third meeting of the High Level Panel of the UN Secretary General, scheduled to end today in Liberia, Holguin said that the objective is not only to wipe out the scourge worldwide, but to create indispensable conditions to make achievements irreversible.
She warned that in view of a rise in population to nine billion inhabitants, with a view on wellbeing that privileges excessive consumption, and an increasing exhaustion of resources, the current consumption and production patters need to be changed, as only in that way the necessary conditions would be created to secure the wellbeing to all.
The objective of the third meeting of the UN High Level Panel on National Elements for building Sustainable Prosperity is to make proposals for the new global agenda post-2015, from the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.
The process is expected to be contained in a document that should be ready by May 30, with the Panel recommendations for the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
The Panel groups Germany, Benin, Brazil, China, Colombia, South Korea, Cuba, the United States, France, the Netherlands, India, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Latvia, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Timor Leste, Turkey, Yemen, plus a representative of the UN chief.
