Colombian films reach international film festival

Two Colombian films will be participating in the 60th annual San Sebastian International Film Festival.

“La Playa D.C.” (The Beach D.C.) directed by Juan Andres Arango and “La Sirga” (“Towrope”)  by William Vega will be representing Colombia in the festival’s “Horizons” section that features the most important Spanish-speaking films of the year. The two films will compete against ten other Latin American films for the Horizons prize, the winner of which will recieve $43,000.

“La Sirga,” is Vega’s first foray into film and focuses on a young woman who flees a massacre in her Colombian village, attempting to make a new life in the high Andes at the lakeside La Sirga hostal. “La Playa D.C.”, also Arango’s debut feature film, tracks the journey of a young man, Tomas, who flees war on the Pacific Coast and heads for Bogota. Both shown at the 2012 Cannes Festival.

San Sebastian is traditionally one of the biggest events on the Latin American movie calendar because it brings a specific selection of films from Latin America, unreleased in Spain, and to compete for the Horizons Award.

The festival takes place in San Sebastian, Spain, from September 21 until 29.
