Colombia mobile broadband lines up 45% in 12 months through Q3

The number of 3G and 4G mobile broadband lines in Colombia increased by 44.9% in the 12 months through Q3, reaching 3.33mn at that time, according to new statistics from ICT ministry Mintic.

news_2_17aThe number of 3G connections reached 3.20mn at the end of September, while UNE’s 4G offering had 122,962 subscribers at that time.

New players have since launched 4G services via smartphone, which should contribute to continued increases in the number of 4G subscribers in the country.

The total number of mobile connections including 2G reached 4.04mn at the end of Q3. Of that total, Telefónica’s  local unit Movistar Colombia had a 43.3% market share, while América Móvil’s Claro Colombia had a 31.6% market share, despite being the dominant operator in terms of overall mobile connections.

Third largest player Tigo had an 18.4% share in mobile internet, while UNE had a 5.9% market share, according to Mintic.

Although Movistar remains the largest player, the company has lost market share compared to the 53.8% it held as of the end of 3Q12, as other players including Claro, Tigo and UNE have seen faster growth.

Claro maintained its dominance in the overall mobile telephony market, with a 58.3% market share at the end of Q3 compared to 61.5% at the end of 3Q12. The company has faced several regulatory measures this year aimed at curbing its market dominance.

Other players held 2.8% of the market at the end of Q3, compared to just 0.8% at the same point in 2012, Mintic said.
