Colombia army plane crashes, killing 4

An army plane flying from Colombia’s Tolemaida air base to Saravena, which borders with Venezuela, crashed, killing the four people aboard.

The military said in a statement that the Alcaravan aircraft was carrying two pilots and two other officers when it went down shortly after takeoff on the Tolemaida-Saravena air route, according to Xinhua. The crash is the fourth of its kind so far this year involving the Colombian army.

The accident occurred around 11 a.m. local time on Saturday in a rural area outside Choconta, Cundinamarca, killing Lt. Wilfran Yesid Torres, Lt. Johan Baron, Cpl. Alejandro Isaza and Cpl. Jhorman Deybi Rozo, reported EFE. The cause of the accident has yet to be determined.

However, Colombia Reports said the crash was due to bad weather. Attempts to recover the aircraft and victims were delayed until Sunday.

GlobalPost previously reported on an army helicopter crash that occurred in May. All onboard were killed, including seven members of the Colombian Air Force and six police officers. The Colombian Air Force said that the Bell 212 helicopter went down, catching on fire as it fell, during another routine transportation mission, this time from Barranquilla to Caucasia. The cause of that accident was also unknown.
