Days after reporting that a Bogota bus driver had been sexually assaulted while on duty, Police from Colombia’s capital said Monday the assault was invented by the alleged victim to seek financial benefits.

The police said Friday that officers found the bus driver wandering the city on Friday morning wearing only a t-shirt.

According to the alleged victim, three men entered her bus on Thursday evening and sexually abused her after which she was left on the street.

However, on Monday National Police commander Rodolfo Palomino took to the public to announce that the rape case was a hoax and the bus driver admittedly lied to obtain financial benefits.

“The sexual abuse never happened,” Palomino told press.

“After three days of investigation, the 35-year-old woman confessed there had been no sexual aggression as she initially informed … She lied to seek personal benefit,” said the National Police chief.

According to Palomino, the alleged victim retracted her initial statement after investigators found no evidence of sexual violence but did establish inconsistencies in the woman’s story.
