African Countries Attend Seminar in Colombia on Drug Control

Delegates from 10 African countries are attending a seminar on port control against the world drug problem, starting today and continuing until Thursday, with Colombia sharing its experience on the subject. The venue is Santa Marta, capital of the northern province of Magdalena, where representatives of Algeria, Benin, Cameroon, Egypt, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone will meet.

According to an official from the Foreign Ministry, the seminar will be opened by the Deputy Minister for Multilateral Affairs, Patti Londono and Director General of the National Police, Jose Leon Riano.

During the working sessions, experts on the Area Control and Seaport Narcotics Directorate of the Colombian Police will present their knowledge of this criminal phenomenon and trends.

Among these, drug modalities, methods of concealment and camouflage will be discussed, drawing from their work at the ports of Cartagena, Barranquilla, Santa Marta, Buenaventura, San Andres and Uraba.

Sponsored by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense, the National Police and the Presidential Agency for international cooperation, the seminar is part of the strategy designed by the Colombian government to maximize effectiveness against organized crime, the statement says.

This is the second seminar of its kind to be organized in the country. The first took place in Bogota, from March 26 to 30, 2012.
