2 killed, 37 hurt in Colombia bomb blast during children’s Halloween festivities

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) – Colombian authorities say two men were killed and at least 37 people injured when a suitcase bomb the men were carrying on a bicycle exploded during Halloween festivities in a provincial town. Fourteen of the injured are children.

Regional police chief Col. Nelson Ramirez says the two men were suspected members of a drug-trafficking band allied with leftist rebels and it appears the bomb detonated prematurely.

Town security chief Cesar Leynton says the blast occurred Wednesday night two blocks from the central square of Pradera, in Valle del Cauca state, where more than 5,000 children had gathered for Halloween celebrations.

Authorities said two children were badly wounded and were rushed to the regional capital of Cali for treatment.

Ramirez speculated that the bomb’s intended target was Pradera’s police station.
