11 killed in Colombia bus crash

ELEVEN people were killed, including four children, and 31 others injured after a speeding bus crashed into a hill early Saturday in western Colombia, police said.

Among the youngest victims was a child who was only about a year old, a local Red Cross official said, without giving the ages of the other victims.

The bus operated by the Arauca had left the city of Quibdo early Friday headed for the capital Bogota, 800 kilometres away. Authorities suspect the driver, who was injured in the accident, was sleepy.

“He had been driving about 12 hours on public roads,” traffic police director Francisco Patino told RCN Radio.

In an area of sharp turns, the bus crashed into a hill while apparently speeding, according to officials.

Last month, 27 passengers were killed and 15 injured when a bus swerved off a road and flipped over in the central department of Cundinamarca.
