Colombia, Nicaragua Presidents Meet in Mexico

The Colombian Head of State Juan Manuel Santos, and his Nicaraguan counterpart, Daniel Ortega, will meet Saturday in the Mexican capital, announced the Blu Radio station, citing the Colombian ambassador in Mexico, Jose Gabriel Ortiz.

According to Ortiz, noted the radio station, the initiative came from the Nicaraguan president, who through the ambassador of this Central American nation in Mexico, Tamara Hawkins, mentioned that Ortega wanted to shake Santos’ hand and offer a fraternal hug, taking advantage of the swearing-in ceremony for the new Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Meanwhile, Caracol Radio affirmed that the Nicaraguan head of state said verbatim: “Both I and the people of Nicaragua want to fix this situation in a brotherly way, as the two peoples have been throughout the history of Latin America.”

According to the version from Caracol, the announcement comes after recent statements by Santos about not applying the ruling of the Court at The Hague on the maritime boundary dispute with the Central American nation until the rights of Colombians are well defended.

He further added, said Caracol, that recourse to all the legal mechanisms available would be sought so as to ensure that the ruling – granting Managua a maritime border around San Andres Colombian archipelago – does not violate the rights of the Andean nation.
