Former US President James Carter is scheduled to meet today in this capital with members of the government team involved in the peace process with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP). The announcement was made by President Juan Manuel Santos at the end of the first meeting of ministers held this year.
“He is coming to say how they can help, something we so much appreciate. We have great expectations because he is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, with great knowledge about these processes and a person who can contribute to the whole peace-building path,” said Santos.
Carter was one of the first figures in expressing his support to the dialogue between state authorities and the insurgent forces to find a political solution to the armed conflict that has been hitting Colombia for nearly half a century.
He is expected to travel accompanied by three officials from the Foundation bearing his name.
Santos also confirmed that the official government team to the talks, led by Humberto de la Calle, will travel Sunday to Cuba, the permanent venue for these meetings.
The talks will be resumed Monday on the first topic of the agenda, which is comprehensive agricultural development, including six sections.
